6/22-6/23 Final Thoughts!

Below is the link to the form where you can leave your final thoughts as mentioned in my email. You have no other work for Monday and Tuesday. If you have not turned in your final write-up on Modern China, make sure you submit to Tii.

Please know how much I have enjoyed teaching you all this year. This was a great class and I loved hearing your discussions and seeing the effort you put into you work. You were faced with so many challenges this year and you rose to the occasion. I hated not being able to spend these last few months with you in the classroom. I thank you for your hard work. I wish you all an amazing summer and I hope you will stop by our office and say hi next year.

Sincerely,
Mrs. Santos

Today we will discuss China's progression since the death of Mao Zedong. This is one perspective among many and is by no means comprehensive. I try to show both sides (the good and the bad) and I encourage you to form your own opinions as well. Many of you have more direct knowledge of life in China. Feel free to use that in your final write-up.

Your final write-up is detailed on the last slide of the PowerPoint.

Today you have two readings, one on Hong Kong and one on Taiwan. This will give you a good overview of China's relationship with these two regions.

The Hong Kong reading has two articles in it. The first one is required. The second is optional but is related to the current situation in Hong Kong.

You just need to read and understand the regional statuses of each in preparation for your final write-up.

Today I will have live office hours if you would like more in depth feedback or clarification on your feedback. Below is a link to a Zoom meeting I will leave open from 10am-12pm. Students will be admitted to a waiting room. I will admit you one at a time where you will have 5 minutes to discuss your feedback. When finished, I will admit the next person. You are welcome to come anytime during that time period but the last person will be admitted at 11:55. I will inform anyone I cannot get to that they can email me with questions (which is an option for everyone) or potentially set up another time to talk. Please email Mrs. Santos if you have questions.

You are welcome to begin work on those if you wish. In fact you are welcome to work ahead as much as you like this week. Your final assignment is posted on Friday and is due no later than Monday at  9am so that I can grade it. Friday by 10pm is encouraged. You may turn that in whenever you like between now and then.

Monday, June 8, 2020

6/12/20

Today you need to finish the China under Mao lecture if you did not do so yesterday. If you are finished, you can review your China notes to prepare for your assessment on Monday. This will be similar to your India assessment.

Below is a link to the John Oliver interview with the Dalai Lama for those that are interested.

Below is a link to a movie we would normally watch in class. It is an excellent representation of life in China from the Republic and Civil War all the way through Mao's Cultural Revolution. It is not required but students generally really enjoy the film. I encourage you to watch it and try to identify the events you've learned about in the film and consider their impact. It is in Chinese but has English subtitles.

6/10/20

Today we will look at the Republic period in China. The republic would overthrow the Qing dynasty. It was short-lived but would send China in to a civil war that would last through both world wars before being defeated by Mao Zedong's Communist regime.

Read and answer the questions in the document below. Submit your questions to Tii when finished (preferably by 10pm tonight). You may turn in as late as Friday but know that our communism discussion tomorrow will be harder to follow without the context of the Republic.

Because we should

Below you will find a link to a list of anti-racism resources put together by one of our wonderful humanities teachers. There are books, movies, articles. We can all be better and should all be more educated about the injustices in this country. I hope some of you will find these helpful. I have seen and read some of them myself and they are wonderful. If you want some easier but great ones to start, I recommend reading Malcolm X and watching Selma.

Anti-Racism Resources

Here are some other resources that are really great and help to clarify things. Mr. Smith and I are working on setting up a Zoom meeting where you can all come to discuss and ask questions.

'Riots,' 'violence,' 'looting': Words matter when talking about race and unrest, experts say

Like Trump, JFK faced riots. Here’s what he did to stop the violence in Birmingham in 1963.

The lessons of Robert Kennedy’s moral leadership on race relations

7 Ways We Know Systemic Racism Is Real

And for those that find music to be a healing connection, a teacher brought these two great songs to my attention. They were popular in the 70's but are so applicable and may help you wrap your head around how long this fight has been going on.

If you did not finish the dynasties lecture from yesterday, make sure you do so today.

Sadly, one topic that I had to cut was the Mongols.I LOVE talking about the Mongols so this makes me sad. The Yuan dynasty, as mentioned in the lecture, was ruled by the Mongols. The Mongols, though short-lived, had a wide-reaching impact on the entire world. If you would like to learn more about them, look through the powerpoint below (there is a crash course video included as well that gives a great overview).

6/4/20

Today we will discuss the Chinese Dynasties. This will all be one video. You can watch all of it today and either take tomorrow off or look at the supplemental materials on the Mongols. OR You can watch half today and half tomorrow. Do what works for you.

Check this out!

Hi students. Some of our Skyline Juniors have created an anonymous survey to collect student voices on the school closure. They have launched this statewide and plan to submit it to OSPI (the office of the state superintendent). They are using this to document what the closure is like and get student voices heard in upcoming plans.

This is incredibly fantastic and I hope you will take a few minutes to participate. They need to hear from you!

Now that you have learned about all the empires, answer the following questions in a few sentences each and submit to Tii under the Early Indian Empires assignment.

  1. Which of the empires do you think had the greatest impact on the people OR which empire do you think was the most successful and why?
  2. Which leader or group do you think had the greatest impact and why? (think outside the British/East India Company. That's too obvious).
  3. What do you think is the most significant event from the Empire period and why?
This will be due by 10pm tonight so keep it simple.

On Tuesday you will have a written assessment on India. Make sure your notes are thorough and ready for this.

5/26/20-5/28/20

Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday you will work on taking notes on the Indian empires that you did not present on. Your notes should include the following for each empire:

  • 2-3 most important people (include an important detail for each)
  • 2 important events from the empire (write down enough information to understand the importance of the event)
  • One piece of cultural information
Empires in Order:
  • Mauryans
  • Guptas
  • Mughals (remember this empire was long lasting and was split into 2 presentations)
  • British Raj

You should listen to 2 presentations for each empire which is why you have 3 days. If you run out of time and need to do just one at some point, that's fine. But listening to more than one will help you make sure you have the most important information. If any of the presentations look incomplete or blank, try downloading or opening with Google Slides. Formatting can get thrown off sometimes. Please let Mrs. Santos know if there are issues.

Each day, leave a compliment on the presentations you watched!

On Thursday at 1:00 pm we will have a Zoom meeting where we will discuss the questions you will need to answer on Friday.

Monday, May 18, 2020

5/18/20-5/22/20

Your task this week is to complete your Indian empires project. This is due to the turn-in folder no later than 10 pm on Friday May 22nd. If you or your group run into trouble, let me know if you need time. I am not opposed to a Monday morning turn-in if needed.

India Project turn-in folder

On Tuesday at 11:00 am I will have a Zoom meeting where you can ask questions. I will also go over how to record your presentation using Zoom and upload it to YouTube if that is something you would like to try. Remember you can also just record audio on your PowerPoint.

Presenting is usually a required skill that we practice but...Covid. With that said, I do highly encourage some form of video recording, but if that really freaks you out, you can just upload the PPT. Just make sure your information is really clear.

Monday, May 11, 2020

5/15/20

Spend some time today working on your India project. A good place to start is just to read your posted reading and take notes, focusing on the required elements of your presentation. Get a good understanding of your empire before you just start putting stuff in a PowerPoint. You presentation will be better organized and more cohesive if you do this.

**As a heads up, the quiz you are doing for Smith today will go in both gradebooks. It will be process on my side since we already did our written assessment.

5/14/20

Below you will find print and video instructions for your Early India Project. You will have a little over a week to work on this which should be more than enough. You can flex your time as needed around your other work, but you should using 20-25 minutes a day on average. You may not need this much time, but I will expect your best work since your classmates will be getting their notes from you.

As context for your project, please watch the video on the Indus and Aryan civilizations below and add to your notes. This is the the straightforward and concise information I am looking for. You will need more than what is in the readings, but try not to include every detail.

5/13/20

Today you need to complete your Indian Religions Assessment. You can type your answers directly into the document below and submit to Tii. This is due no later than 10 pm tonight. Please read directions carefully before beginning.

Indian Religions Assessment

5/12/20

Today you have time to continue work on your visual. Tomorrow you will have your assessment on Indian religions so make sure you review your notes at some point. The assessment will be open note but you will need to put your answers in your own words so make sure you understand the basic beliefs and key words.

Hindu Deities

Here is the PowerPoint from today's optional Zoom meeting on Hindu deities. This content is not required but may help clarify some aspects of Hinduism or at least provide some extra interest for you.

Hindu Deities

Monday, May 4, 2020

5/8/20

Today you will read about Buddhism. I know this seems like a lot of content this week, but next week we get to be creative so never fear!

You also get some choice today. Below you will find information on the origins of Buddhism. To understand this information, you can do one of the following:
  • Read the Life of the Buddha reading and answer the questions on the worksheet (depending on your reading speed, this could be your fastest option).
  • Use the powerpoint to answer the questions on your worksheet or take your own notes.
  • Watch the video and answer the worksheet or take your own notes.
Do what works for you today! If you don't finish today you will have some time to finish today, you can finish on Monday if needed. But it should not take too much past the 25 minutes.

5/7/20

Today you will study the Creation hymn with Mr. Smith. No SS work for today so give Smith's work 50 minutes.

Don't forget that the final draft of your research paper is due tomorrow May 8!

5/6/20

Today you will learn about religious diversity within India as well as the Aryan caste system. Please take good notes. On Friday you will create a visual using your Hinduism notes so make sure you understand. You will later have a brief assessment on Hinduism/Buddhism so make sure you ask questions if you don't understand something.

Indian Religious Diversity video lecture (Ignore that it talks about yesterday's Zoom meeting. I moved this to today).

Indian Religious Diversity ppt (ignore the slide about the optional Zoom meeting as we did that on Tuesday)

Zoom meeting today at TBD! Hindu deities/culture/misconceptions will be discussed. Time for questions afterwards. Check your email for invite.

5/5/20

Today you will get an introduction to Hinduism. You will notice the video is only 21 minutes long. I would guess it will take you 25-30 minutes depending on how often you need to pause. You will have the full 50 minutes to complete this as you have no work for Mr. Smith today.

Hinduism Basics Video Lecture

Hinduism Basics ppt

**Clarification note about Hinduism** I have had a few questions about the idea that Hinduism is monotheistic. You will see in the lecture above that this is because the Hindu deities are all manifestations/avatars of the highest deity, the Brahman. While there is some diversity within Hinduism on this, this is the most widely held belief. While monotheistic is a simplified term (in truth its status is more complex that can be defined by mono/polytheism) this is the closest definition. The universe is still recognized as being created/connected to/beholden to one omniscient being, the Brahman. If you would like to discuss this further, learn more about the deities, or share your own Hindu perspective on this belief, be sure to come to the Zoom meeting tomorrow!

If you finish early, you may either look at tomorrow's lecture or work on finalizing your research paper, whichever works best for you today.

There will be a Zoom meeting at TBD tomorrow During this meeting I will give some more depth on Hindu culture using quotes from Skyline students and parents. We will also look at some of the Hindu Deities. This is not required content but is always fun content for students and really helps to gain a little deeper understanding of Hinduism. There will be time for questions afterwards about the content or the paper.

5/4/20

Welcome to Week 3 of Humanities Covid style!

This week we will move on to new content. The final draft of your research paper is Due Friday May 8th. This should include your full paper, revised source evaluation (does not count towards the word count), and MLA works cited page. Word count is 1100-1300 words. Submit to Second Semester Research Paper on Tii.

Remember to give someone who needs one a peer edit on Revision 2 this week! I added a new peermark assignment since the first one expired. It will still be under Revision 2.

There may be some time to work on this if you finish assignments early this week (Example: tomorrow's lecture is not the full 50 minutes, quite a bit shorter), but just like when we move on in class during this stage, you will be expected to finish this on your own time.  If you need extra time past the 8th, this is not a problem, but you MUST communicate with Mr. Smith or Mrs. Santos. Just let us know you need some extra time. We will need time to grade it and the longer you stretch out this process the tougher it will be on your brains, but we want you to do what is best for you at this point. So don't feel like you can't ask for extended time if needed.

**Paper Note: Remember that one BTS does not necessarily equal one paragraph. If your paragraph is a page or more, it is too long and you need to find the spot in that section where Enter+Indent is needed. This is the place where you naturally go to your next point/piece of evidence within that BTS. If you are having trouble with that, email Mrs. Santos for help.

For your assignment today, you will have 50 minutes to complete the Didactic literature work on Mr. Smith's website. You have no SS work for today.

Tuesday, April 28, 2020

Week 2 Zoom Notes and Resources

Below are the highlights from today's Zoom meeting. You will also find the PowerPoint made by Mr. Smith that we referenced.

  • Grading: Your baseline grade for Semester 2 will be whatever your grade is right now in the gradebook. This is the grade as of March 12th when school closed. Your grade can not end lower than this. You can improve that grade with continued diligent work. You MUST engage in the required learning. If you choose to not engage in the learning you will receive an incomplete for the semester.
  • So What Evidence: A big issue we're seeing with the outlines is making claim with your so what and then not giving evidence to prove it. Example: "...leading to a loss of traditional culture in Africa." The evidence for your what and how does not prove that this happened. You MUST give evidence showing that culture was actually lost, that society was unstable, that a wrongful perspective of Africa in Western society exists because of media.
    • Below is a PPT that Mr. Smith created showing examples of this and other common issues in the outlines and suggestions on how to improve.
    • On Santos' website yesterday is a post titled Research Resources that gives some articles you can use for evidence for your so what. Lots of good information there.
  • Analyzing Rhetorical Appeals: In general, be extremely cautious in pointing out rhetoric. It is very difficult to prove that someone was actually persuaded and if you are saying they used pathos to get an emotional response from someone, you are going to have to prove that the emotional response existed.
    • In TFA, just don't. Fiction is not meant to persuade. You should not be analyzing the rhetoric (which is different than language) of fictional characters.
    • In media: You need to look at the effects. If you are saying an NGO used pathos, you either need to show that donations increased because of this, that ads with this technique bring more donations than ads that don't, OR explain why their attempts to make people feel bad for Africa are bad and then give proof of that.
    • If you have additional questions about this, please email Santos or Smith.
  • Peer Edits: Once rough drafts are submitted, PLEASE go to the peermark assignment and give a classmate a peer edit of their draft. Help each other out! If you can't tell who needs one, email Mrs. Santos and she'll assign you one.
  • Other Notes:
    • Please stay in past tense when writing!
    • Do not stress about your conclusions. Do your best to summarize your argument and emphasize your so what.
    • The Intro and Conclusion PPTs on the websites are great resources.

Research Resources

Below are a few articles that could help with the so what part of your thesis statements. Many of you are making claims in your so what that you are not backing up with evidence. You MUST have proof that what you're claiming is actually happening. If you don't find what you need in one of these, email Santos and I will try to help.

Is Foreign Aid Bad for Africa? This helps with the NGO prompt but also has good stuff on how Africa is viewed by the rest of the world.

What do African Aid Recipients Think of Charity Ads? Same help as above. Good for seeing how people see them and how the aid works.

History of Africa through Western Eyes Good information on western perspectives of Africa

Why Africans Worry about How Africa is Portrayed in Western Media Remember this can be useful for any prompt if you so what has anything to do with the western perspective of Africa

Faith in Africa Great article on how the loss of traditional African religion (statistics included!) has shaped society

4/24-5/1/20

Below is the document containing instructions for this week. This week you will again have both LA and SS time to work on your research paper each day. Instructions are in the document and resources are linked below. Zoom meeting will be on Tuesday at 1:00 pm. Santos/Smith will give some guidance on your rough drafts and discuss common feedback given on the outlines. We will leave time for questions at the end.

**Important Reminder: The Weekly Feedback assignment is ONLY for asking questions and getting help as you work. Your finished assignments should always be uploaded to the Second Semester Research Paper assignments (Revision 1, 2 or the final which just has no revision).

April 24-May 1 Assignments

Santos and Smith will be giving full feedback on your outlines. We will work as fast as we can but it does take time. If you have already received feedback, use it to guide your rough draft. If we have not yet gotten to yours, still start on your rough draft. You can use the outline feedback to go back and revise your rough draft before submitting once you have received feedback.

A few tips to get started:

  • Work on just one section at a time if needed. Mental blocks (especially in this crazy time) are real! Start with just your introduction and then take a break for the day. Then the next day do BTS 1, and so on. Just leave some time for adjustments at the end of the week.
  • Just start writing! The easiest way to unblock the brain is to poke a hole in the dam. Even if it feels a little like a free-write at first, just start getting your thoughts on paper. The more you write, the more coherent you will become. You can always go back and edit later.
  • Use the resources below. Seeing ideas and examples can help get the words flowing.
  • Don't stress!! This is a rough draft. It will need editing. That's normal
  • Take a break! Go outside! Move! Maybe you only write for 30 minutes and then take a break before continuing. Do what works for you. Our brains can only handle so much time staring at the screen.

Due Dates:
5/1: Rough Draft
5/8: Final Draft

While all previous resources are linked below, here are some key resources for this week:

If you are using an image in your paper, here is some guidance on how to cite and refer to your image.
On a page before your Works Cited page, you will have this:

Appendix A (center, no other formatting)

Picture (just copy paste your image, left aligned)
Fig. 1 (Centered underneath the image)

Then in your works cited page, include a normal MLA citation for the image. In text, you can reference the picture by referring to Figure one “In an ad released by…celebrities are shown…  (see fig. 1)”

Below is a great resource for how to properly cite images and gives an example. It shows how to do it using the image in text, but the idea is the same. You will just put your image in an appendix instead of in text.

Something to make you laugh

Here is your laugh for the week, and a little insight into where my household is at right now.

First read this thread (just until you get to the part asking for donations, though you can read comments if you choose). If a little language offends, just skip this.

So my husband sent me the above. We laughed really hard. And then on Sunday, this happened:

Don't worry, I am in the abomination camp. Though my husband was not... :)  We're thinking of making it an April tradition to commemorate the world that is Covid Quarantine. Will you join the totwaffle world?

Happy Monday!

First a little fun.
Meme Creator - Funny It's quarantine day ...again Meme Generator ...

If you have never seen Groundhog Day, it is your unofficial assignment to watch it this week and laugh your face off.

And now to business!

April 6 Weekly Activities

While you will notice that the activities are essentially the same this week, there is one important addition: We have an official due date for the paper! (see document above) As such, while this week is still optional, we strongly encourage you to make some progress this week, especially if you have not looked at your paper yet during the closure.

You will essentially be shooting for one of 2 goals this week: Submitting an outline to Revision 1 for teacher review or completing a rough draft for peer edit by Friday.

While all previous resources are linked below, here are some key resources for this week:

3/30/20

Below you will find this week's guide for success! It is likely that soon we will be starting new curriculum. When that happens, the official due date for the paper will come very quickly.  So PLEASE work on your paper this week!

March 30 Weekly Activities

You will essentially be shooting for one of 2 goals this week: Submitting an outline to Revision 1 for teacher review or completing a rough draft for peer edit by Friday.

At the end of this week's weekly document, you will find some tips on Language Analysis. I put these together after our Zoom meeting on Thursday. Hopefully this will help answer questions for those that couldn't attend. As always, feel free to email if you have any questions.

In addition to the guidance document, I have included the outline and rough draft revisions PowerPoint as well as some helpful tips on Intros and Conclusions (examples included!). I have included Mr. Smith's newly updated document as well. This will be slightly less general with ideas for this paper. Please look over these as they give some great guidance on your rough draft.

As always feel free to upload your paper with specific questions for feedback to this week's weekly feedback assignment. You'll see in the document that there is also an opportunity for a peer edit this week.

And now for my new Monday tradition, something funny!!
Just to show what you can do with your time given enough motivation, here is Coronavirus Rhapsody (hopefully we have some Queen fans out there)

Below you will find a link to the rubric that will be used for the research paper. The percentages indicate how much of the overall project is attributed to that category.

This is especially helpful for seeing how the Source Evaluation will be graded. Note that the OPCVL and Language analysis will be graded as one score, though they are separated in the rubric.

3/23/20

Below you will find several links. The first is a the document that details activities we would like to you work on this week. These are focused around the process for revising/improving your research paper. If you are behind and not quite to the steps listed, we encourage you to catch up! Do some research. Work on your outline.

If you have technology needs or other needs such as meals, please reach out to me and let me know and I will get you in contact with the right channels to help you ASAP.

March 23rd Weekly Activities

For this week we would like you to focus on reviewing your research and source evaluation feedback and building your outline. PLEASE DO NOT WORRY ABOUT A FINAL DUE DATE. With things constantly changing, we want you to slow down and really revise your outlines, source evaluations, and language analysis.

Below are resources to use in this week's activities. As always, you may email me or Mr Smith at any time for help or questions. In general, your 7th period teacher will be the one reviewing your assignments and giving feedback on Turnitin, but either teacher is available for questions via email. For 5th period, Santos is giving feedback for last names McCuistion-Zhang. Smith has everyone above that in the alphabet.

Quick update to Turnitin instructions.

If you are choosing to continue work on your research paper you will notice the assignment titles for Turnitin have changed. When submitting your outline it should go under Second Semester Research Paper Revision 1. The rough draft goes under Second Semester Research Paper Revision 2. The final draft will just be under the second semester research paper. This will prevent Tii from thinking you plagiarized yourself.

3/15/20

Hello students.

Thank you to those of who have turned in thesis statements. Please know that at this point all due dates are not required and will be merely left as a guide if you would like to continue working. We will communicate more information as the district gives us more information.

If you choose to continue work towards your outline, please refer to the following resources. Remember you have done this before. This should look the same as the 4-level outlines you did in first semester. You may use either my formatting or Mr. Smith's. Just make sure it is in MLA format and that all template formatting is removed. You should include your research question and thesis statement. This should hopefully be a second revision on your outline using feedback from your initial thesis.

You do NOT need an intro or conclusion.
